DARE to Engage the Brain (Grades 3-5)
If students aren’t engaged, they cannot learn. In this age of mouse clicks and touchscreens, the brain responds differently to stimuli. Because society is rapidly changing and many children live in impoverished environments, we must respond to the changes proactively by choosing the most powerful strategies. DARE stands for: D = Dopamine • This neurotransmitter keeps the brain alert and focused. A = Amygdala • This part of the brain is the seat of emotion. R = Reticular Activating System • This part of the brain regulates the amount and type of sensorimotor information that comes into the brain. E = Essentials of life • The amount of sleep, type of food, and exercise people get affect levels of focus and engagement. Even time of day has an effect! This highly engaging, informative workshop gives teachers research and high-impact strategies to engage their students so they can interact with their content at high levels for lasting memory. LeAnn will be modeling the whole process throughout the training.

Learning and Retaining Academic Vocabulary (Grades 3-5)
If we’re to help our English Learners access the rigorous demands of today’s content standards, we must cultivate the “code” that drives school success: academic language. This session will focus on high-impact strategies of the four essential components of academic language.Participants will learn how vocabulary is best taught as a tool for completing and constructing more complex messages, as well as how to: 1) Teach high-frequency academic words and discipline-specific vocabulary across content areas, 2) Utilize strategies for teaching academic vocabulary, moving students from Tier 1 to Tiers 2 and 3 words and selecting appropriate words to teach, 3) Assess vocabulary growth as you go. Vocabulary instruction must connect to the texts our ELs are given to read, not from a set of activities that teach words in isolation. This session will help participants get started developing their instructional tool-kit with regard to leveraging improved academic vocabulary for closing the achievement gap.

Teacher Clarity for Student Success: Essential Practices for Students and Teachers (Grades 3-5)
Teacher clarity is both a method and a mindset, and it has an impressive effect size of 0.75 (Hattie, 2009). “It’s teaching that is organized and intentional,” explain Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, Olivia Amador, and Joseph Assof. “It brings a forthrightness and fairness to the classroom because student learning is based on transparent expectations. And when we are clear, our students can better plan and predict, set goals, and acquire a stronger sense of how to judge their own progress.” This breakout session gives an engaging overview of an evidence-based systematic process that begins and ends with standards. Attendees will receive a quick look at examples, planning templates, key professional learning questions, and other strategies for designing and leading highly effective instruction. Student Clarity: Partnering with Students to Answer ... Where Am I Going? Where Am I Now? How Will I Close the Gap? (Grades 3-5)
Imagine students who describe their learning in these terms: “I know where I’m going, I have the tools I need for the journey, and I monitor my own progress.” Now imagine the extraordinary difference this type of ownership makes in their progress over the course of a school year. This session highlights how to make this scenario an everyday reality in your classroom — one that will significantly increase your students’ capacity to thrive as they take responsibility for their own learning. With its foundation in John Hattie’s Visible Learning research, and Fisher and Frey’s Surface/Deep/Transfer instructional framework, this breakout session dives into the critical component of self-assessment. Building and Developing Visible Learners reveals: 1) How to partner with students to develop ‘student clarity’ around learning, 2) How to create a classroom culture where errors are viewed as opportunities to learn, 3) The most effective types of assessment and how each can motivate students to higher levels of achievement, 4) How to introduce students to the tools they will use to support their own learning, along with the know-how they need to choose the right tool for any learning challenge, 5) The learning strategies, including cognitive, metacognitive, and motivational strategies, that fuel student progress, and how to give students opportunities to use them, and 6)Real-world examples of the strategies and tools at work. Inspiring and practical, this session gives participants an understanding for empowering students in shaping their own educational success.

DARE to Engage the Brain (Grades PreK-2)

Vocabulary instruction must connect to the texts our ELs are given to read, not from a set of activities that teach words in isolation. This session will help participants get started developing their instructional tool-kit with regard to leveraging improved academic vocabulary for closing the achievement gap.

Dave Nagel will introduce ways to better align lessons, objectives, and outcomes of learning seamlessly so that the classroom hours flow productively for everyone.

Student Clarity: Partnering with Students to Answer ... Where Am I Going? Where Am I Now? How Will I Close the Gap? (Grades PreK-2)

DARE to Engage the Brain

Learning and Retaining Academic Vocabulary

Teacher Clarity for Student Success: Essential Practices for Students and Teachers

DARE to Engage the Brain

Learning and Retaining Academic Vocabulary

Teacher Clarity for Student Success: Essential Practices for Students and Teachers
