High Impact Content Area Literacy Strategies: Selecting and Teaching Complex Texts (Grades 3-5)

Literacy is important across all disciplines. This workshop provides whole schools or districts the steps necessary to prepare students to read complex texts across disciplines and grade levels. Educators will learn how to select appropriate complex texts and craft purposeful instruction that results in all students becoming literate across grades and subjects—without losing the veracity of their disciplines. Participants will: 1) Determine the elements of a text that constitute complexity, 2) Learn how to assess the qualitative and quantitative features of texts across disciplines, 3) Discover the importance of reader and task considerations in the selection of complex texts in different content areas, 4) Explore a variety of teacher-led, peer-led, and independent tasks that focus on teaching complex text and guiding students’ learning from those texts, 5) Learn how to gradually release responsibility to students and help them become reflective independent readers of cross content material, 6) Increase student access to complex texts in every classroom through student interaction, 7) Learn specific strategies to ensure English Learners can access complex texts across content areas
